Waternoisepolution / SEAWEED
Non Human design, designing for an organism other than humans
In this project I started researching the influence of humans on undersea life. We humans create a lot of noise underwater, which has a negative impact on underwater life. Animals such as dolphins and whales navigate and communicate through sound. But this is prevented by the predominant noise of humans. For example, big ships and building wind farms at sea. These activities create a lot of noise underwater.
At the same time, I started doing material research into seaweed and discovered that seaweed is sound-absorbing, and I started designing with it. Besides seaweed's sound-absorbing function, seaweed has a very positive influence on the environment and is highly efficient in storing CO2.
I’ve made different design concepts for seaweed objects that can be hiding, breeding spots for animals. They can be placed in the sea where the noise polution takes place. Besides seaweed's sound-absorbing function, seaweed has a very positive influence on the environment and is highly efficient in storing CO2.
In addition to my seaweed design concepts, I have created an installation in a 360 degree dome where people can experience a little bit of what underwater animals experience when a large cargo ship passes by in their habitat.
I want to make people aware of something we don't deal with on a daily basis because we can't see or hear it. In this installation, your senses are awakened and hopefully people become aware of the undersea situation animals deal with every day..
