Growing wool

A project about Dutch wool where I've been searching for a way to make good use of this waste material so we don't have to burn it anymore. A lot of sheeps wool is burned if the quality is not good enough for the clothing industry.

Because of the waste of this beautiful product I wanted to create something that’s alive and can also take care of the lack of greenness in city’s. While the fishing nets filled with the wool and seeds hang between the city streets, the plants only need sun and rainwater to grow.

Sheep's wool retains moisture and nutrients for a long time, wich is really nice for plants in dryer areas. The nutrients in the wool help the plants grow and keep them healthy. Also the structure of the wool supports the roots of the plants. The roots move through the thick wool structure, forming a strong root network

I used old fishing nets for reinforcement because the wet wool can become quite heavy in combination with plants. I have experimented with different seeds and living plants and tested what grows best under what conditions.

This project is a start for a larger project and will be continued in the future.
