Folding blue
For this project, I designed a folding chair made from residual materials, inspired by the iconic Zig-Zag Chair by Gerrit Rietveld. What fascinates me about the Zig-Zag Chair is the balance it strikes between simplicity and complexity. With only a few planes and lines, it creates a form that feels both minimal and dynamic. Starting from this fascination, I explored how the chair could be transformed into a folding object while preserving its distinctive character.
Voor dit project heb ik een klapstoel ontworpen van restmaterialen, geïnspireerd op de iconische Zig-Zag-stoel van Gerrit Rietveld. Wat mij zo fascineert aan de Zig-Zag-stoel is de balans tussen eenvoud en complexiteit. Met slechts een paar vlakken en lijnen creëert hij een vorm die zowel minimalistisch als dynamisch aanvoelt. Vanuit deze fascinatie heb ik onderzocht hoe de stoel kon worden omgevormd tot een opvouwbaar object, met behoud van zijn kenmerkende karakter.
To make the chair foldable, certain connection points needed to allow movement. I challenged myself to achieve this without using conventional hinges. Through a series of material experiments and prototypes, I discovered that denim fabric could function as a flexible yet remarkably strong connecting element. It provided the necessary movement while being robust enough to support the weight of a person.
The result is a design in which residual materials, structure, and movement come together. The chair folds without hinges, allowing the softness of textile to take over the role of a mechanical joint. It is a contemporary interpretation of the Zig-Zag Chair, where simplicity, experimentation, and sustainability reinforce one another.
Om de stoel opvouwbaar te maken, moesten bepaalde verbindingspunten beweging mogelijk maken. Ik daagde mezelf uit om dit te realiseren zonder gebruik te maken van conventionele scharnieren. Door middel van een reeks materiaalexperimenten en prototypes ontdekte ik dat denimstof kon fungeren als een flexibel en toch sterk verbindingselement. Het zorgde voor de nodige bewegingsvrijheid en was tegelijkertijd robuust genoeg om het gewicht van een persoon te dragen.
Het resultaat is een ontwerp waarin restmaterialen, structuur en beweging samenkomen. De stoel vouwt op zonder scharnieren, waardoor de zachtheid van textiel de rol van een mechanisch scharnier overneemt. Het is een eigentijdse interpretatie van de Zig-Zag stoel, waarin eenvoud en duurzaamheid elkaar versterken.
